Colonies are not required, but joining or forming a colony with friends and neighbors in your state adds an extra level of preparations to your A.N.T.S survival plan.
Local colonies allow ants to meet up with one another to practice and learn new skills as well as discuss plans for what they would do in a wide spread level two disaster.
